San Juan Cafe
After a long day hiking around the Natural Bridges National Monument, I decided to pop over to Mexican Hat, Utah for some food. The drive includes a white knuckle switchback down the dirt mountain path that is Utah 261 but eventually I found my way into Mexican Hat and to the San Juan Cafe.
The San Juan Cafe is located close to the river just before Highway 163 crosses over and leaves town. The cafe shares the lot with the San Juan Trading Post and Inn and there is a limited amount of parking next to the one story building.
The Food
Now to the important part…The Food! The San Juan Cafe had an assorted menu of sandwiches, burgers, Navajo tacos and more. I went with the Navajo Burger. I picked this for one main reason, Fry Bread! Fry Bread is one of the best things I have ever eaten and this was a hamburger wrapped in Fry Bread so what could be better than that! I added some onion rings on the side to complete the meal.
The Navajo Burger came on huge pieces of Fry Bread that was really good with a buttery flavor. It was about double the size of the burger to the point I could take several bites of the amazing bread before reaching hamburger. The burger was good. It was the perfect savory compliment to that amazing bread. Did I mention that I enjoyed the bread? The onion rings were also really nice. They had a light breading and really big and thick pieces of onion.
One side note. The young waiter who was helping me was great. A bit of a rush came in and he was super positive. He even ran from table to table to bring refills and take orders. It was so nice to see a young person take so much pride in his work! If you find yourself near Monument Valley, Natural Bridges or just find yourself in Southern Utah, Make sure to give the San Juan Cafe a shot!
