Big John’s Texas Barbecue – Page, AZ

After the long drive up to Horseshoe Bend it was time to find a bit to eat. I made my way to Page, Arizona which is the only town around. As I was making my way through town I spotted the place that I had to stop at and after seeing the pictures you will understand why Big John’s Texas Barbecue was the only choice.

When I looked up and saw a converted gas station with an old truck and some cut out signs I knew I had to stop. When I stopped I did find the best piece of the display.

A huge steel smoker sitting in the parking lot at Big John's Texas Barbecue with a wheel barrow of wood next to it.

I thought that this smoker was just part of the display but then they added this wheelbarrow of wood to the smoker and I realized this was where they were cooking the meat! This was the biggest smoker I had ever seen. Probably 6 to 8 feet wide and smelled amazing. After seeing this I got really excited about the food!

The Food

As a professional food blogger I thought it was important to order the Sampler Plate. Not because I wanted to but because I wanted to give you all the most accurate information. You’re welcome. The Sampler Plate comes with chopped beef brisket, pulled pork, spicy link sausage, and 2 baby back pork ribs. This is dedication to my craft.

Oh were to begin. I went with the ribs because of the geometry of them sitting over the rest of the meats I figured they had to be attacked first. The ribs absolutely fell of the bone. They had a rich smoky flavor to them and were absolutely delicious.

The sausage had a bit of a sweet flavor with a bit of a spice but nothing that was overwhelming. I enjoyed the sausage very much.

The beef brisket had that rendered/melted fat taste with every bite. It had a good texture and a subtle smoke flavor that was very good.

The pulled pork was chopped into thin pieces. It didn’t have that same smoky flavor as the beef but was still good.

They had a couple of sauce options and I tried the sweet, which was sweet with a little tang to it. The sweet went really well with the pork. I also tried the hot sauce which was spicy but not crazy spicy although it did sneak up on you at the end. I liked mixing the hot with sausage to double up the spice!

Holy cow there is more. The coleslaw was more sweet than tangy, had a nice crunch and was nice and chilled. Finally the beans were more of a pinto beans with pork instead of the heavily sweetened baked beans that you get at some places.

Catching my breath

Ok this was a lot of food but it was all good food. My favorite were the ribs for sure. They were so tender and delicious. None of the portions were overwhelming and I was pretty hungry so I did a very good job on the plate. It also gave me a chance to catch up on the Great Southwestern Road Trip. I actually took some time to look at my Google maps and found out that a road I needed for the next leg was closed and my two hour drive had just turned into a five hour drive.

That devastating news had to be consoled with dessert in the desert. (I needed that line because I have spelled one of those wrong about 100 time this week.) To drown my sorrows on the extra long drive to the next stop give myself energy for the 5 hour drive ahead of me, I ordered some peach cobbler which came with vanilla ice cream.

If all of the meat didn’t sell you on Big John’s Texas Barbecue then I sure hope this cobbler does. It was amazing and immediately put me back in a good mood.

Finding Big Johns Texas Barbecue

Big John’s is on Lake Powell Blvd in Page. It is just on the side of the road once you pass the school on your way through town. I would strongly suggest that you stop if you find yourself in Page, Arizona.
