Doug’s Steak and BBQ – Monticello

Doug’s Steak and BBQ

I was in Southern Utah and stumbled upon an absolute gem of a restaurant. Doug’s Steak and BBQ is in the town of Monticello and was some of the best barbecue I have had. I actually lucked out because Doug’s is only open Thursday through Saturday for dinner and I just happened to be driving through at that time. I sure am glad that I did.

The Food

Now for the important part…the Food! I don’t know how to say this so I will just put it like this. I have visited a lot of restaurants and Doug’s simply has the best brisket I have had in a long time. Granted, I haven’t tried brisket at every shop in the world but I would put Doug’s up there against anyone.

Three Large pieces of Brisket, a small corn bread muffin and bowl of cole slaw on a plate at Doug's Steak and BBQ in Monticello, Utah.

I ordered the Brisket which came with one side and one cornbread muffin. It also came with a small serving of BBQ sauce which I thought would be an issue but it wasn’t. From the first time the brisket touched my tongue I knew I was in love. The meat melted in my mouth and I forgot completely about the sauce. The 3 large pieces of brisket was cooked with a rub that tasted like it had some cloves along with other spices. The rub was delicious. There was a bit of fat on the meat which helped the flavor but still plenty of meat. I did try the sauce, although I didn’t need it because of how good the meat was, and it had a subtle sweet flavor that accented the smoked brisket well.

The coleslaw was sweet and tangy and was really good on a hot day. It tasted like there might have been some apples in there as well. The cornbread was firm on the outside and soft on the inside but I didn’t eat much of it because I was still obsessing over the meat! If you find yourself near Monticello, Utah do yourself a favor and give Doug’s a shot!
