Sierra Grande Restaurant
After visiting the Capulin Volcano National Monument I was looking for a nice spot to eat. Luckily the ranger turned me on to the Sierra Grande Restaurant in Des Moines. The Sierra Grande Restaurant is part roadside diner and part convenient store where you can stock up on snacks and gifts but more importantly can sit down for a really nice meal.
The Food!
Now to the important part…the food! I made it to the Sierra Grande Restaurant in time for breakfast, my favorite meal! Breakfast is served until 11 and they have all of the staple items you might want at a roadside diner. I decided to go with the Hungry Boy combo. I figured you don’t become a FatMan without first being a Hungry Boy!

The Hungry Boy came with 2 eggs, hash browns with cheese, 2 pancakes, and choice of ham, bacon or sausage. I picked the bacon. The eggs tasted really good and actually tasted like real eggs that were cracked instead of poured out of a carton. I really liked that! The cheesy hashbrowns had just the right amount of cheese. They weren’t smothered or overwhelmed by the cheese, just enough to help with flavor and to get the hash to stick together. The bacon was amazing. It was some of the best bacon I have ever had and I really enjoy bacon! I ate the pancakes like a dessert. The cakes were thick and fluffy, tasted like they were made with buttermilk, and were really delicious and a perfect way to end the meal!
I also talked to a couple of the local folks that were at the diner and they were all incredibly nice. It was an enjoyable stop with some really great breakfast food. If you find yourself in Des Moines, New Mexico, give the Sierra Grande Restaurant a shot.
