Mine Shaft Tavern – Madrid, New Mexico

Mine Shaft Tavern

On my recent travels around the Santa Fe area, I stumbled upon a little Shangri-La. Among the rolling hills and arid land stood the town of Madrid, New Mexico. This fascinating little hamlet was full of art galleries, chocolate shops, and gift shops. One large watering hole anchored the downtown, the Mine Shaft Tavern.

After spending the morning hiking at the nearby Cerrillos Hills State Park and walking around to see all that Madrid has to offer, it was time to grab a bite. The Mine Shaft was calling my name from the moment I saw it. It is was just dripping with history and pop culture. Plus, walking through the wide doors just feels like you are stepping back in time. Just being there was already a win for lunch.

The Food

Ultimately, this is a blog about great places to EAT so lets get to the important part…The Food! The Mine Shaft Tavern has traditional tavern food, pizza’s, sandwiches, apps and burgers, but also features several Green Chile favorites. That is what led me to the best of both worlds,

I tried the Mad Chile Burger which was the featured burger out of their specialty burger menu. The Mad Chili burger comes with a fried Hatch chile, chopped Hatch chile, chipotle dijonnaise, and aged cheddar. According to the menu, this burger was also named the Peoples Choice Award of the Green Chile Cheese Burger Smackdown.

This burger was kind of ridiculously good. The burger its self was cooked perfectly and was seasoned really well. The fried Chile and chopped Chile added a bit of heat but mostly just added a ton of flavor to the burger. I will say that after the first bite I took the fried version back off and ate that as a side. The fries were also really good, making this a really good meal. I think I could have just eaten an entire plate of the fried chile but the burger was delicious. If you find yourself near Madrid, do yourself a favor and stop by the Mine Shaft Tavern!
