Roam 350 Virtual Leash and Training Collar
There is always a line between keeping your pet safe and allowing them a bit of freedom to stretch their legs and explore. Not every owner wants to give the freedom of having their dog fully off-leash and are exploring virtual leashes. The Roam 250 Virtual Leash and Training Collar by Heel, allows owners to control multiple dogs with an adjustable leash length. My friend Jackie tested out the Roam 350 with her dog Chief and was nice enough to share her thoughts.

About the Reviewer
Since I still don’t have a four legged friend to properly test this collar, I was able to enlist my friend Jackie and her dog, Chief. I am not sure who had more fun testing the collar, but based on the photos, it looks like Chief had the best time and is a very good boy! You can follow all of Chief’s adventures on his Instagram here – https://www.instagram.com/thechief_thetoller.

What Jackie Liked
Our dog Chief truly thrives when he’s off-leash and can explore new areas so when we found the Roam Virtual Leash it seemed like the perfect tool for us. Especially because, and it’s important to preface, Chief is already e-collar trained so getting him trained for this e-collar was probably quicker than a dog who has no e-collar training experience. It wasn’t long before we could both relax and he could explore and I didn’t have to worry that he was going too far. That’s all you could really ask for from a tool like this, to take the worry out of going out on an adventure with your best friend.

Overall Fit
The collar fit Chief well although I will say compared to Chief’s other e-collar it is pretty bulky. I could see that for smaller dogs it might be uncomfortable. We used the ¾ inch contact point since he has a long coat. The other option they provide is a short ⅜ inch for short haired dogs. I could see for dogs where their coat is somewhere in-between you might need a different size. Overall it fit great for our pup.

Recall
Because Chief is already trained and pretty good off leash it was actually more difficult to train me as the pet-parent to not call out a recall command when he starts to approach the radius you’ve set. Trusting the tool to do its job requires some self-training as well! Once we both got the hang of it, it was easy to trust the radius that was set! He would typically use the tone as a warning and then come back once the vibrate or static correction was sent.

Ease of Use
The remote is pretty intuitive although larger than the e-collar remote we’re used to. One thing that would be nice is if the remote had some sort of tone when a button is pushed. The remote does vibrate when the dog approaches the boundary and the “Visual Assurance LED” helps but during the day it is really hard to see the light on the remote when a button is pressed
Another thing that would be nice is to have the radius numbers (10, 25, 75, 150, 750) actually on the remote. It’s easy to forget which radius is which.

What I Didn’t Like
As mentioned the fit of the collar is bulky compared to what we’re used to and might be too big for smaller dogs. The remote is intuitive although it is also bigger than our other e-collar’s remote. But it is lighter which is nice. I wish it had a vibrate cue as to when the e-collar received a signal besides just the light which is hard to see during the day. It’s also important to note that Roam Virtual Leash cannot be submerged in water. So for a water dog like Chief that was a bummer but not a deal breaker.
Wrapping up the Heel 350 Leash
The Roam Virtual Leash is the perfect adventure tool for you and your 4-legged best friend. I would recommend it to anyone especially for a dog that is already good off-leash and especially if they are already e-collar trained. The Heel Virtual leash does everything it says it does and we never had any issues with its functionality. Any faults that I have found with the e-collar have nothing to do with the tool itself but more personal preferences.
