Hibernation

Hibernation

I have always been jealous of all of those animals who get to hibernate. They see that it is going to get cold and gray and dreary, and they just get fat and go to sleep! I mean we all kind of do that right? We see the colder months coming and decide to slowly fatten up and spend way more time under the covers than out of them. We just never have the dedication of a bear or a marmot. They take our winter slumber to Olympic Champion level. I can’ t lie, I am a bit jealous.

You may have wondered where I have been lately. Why haven’t I posted or much on this page and how I could leave you all out in the cold while you waited for my next rambling. I would like to say that I tried to hibernate as expertly as a whistle pig. Unfortunately, my hibernation skills leave a lot to be desired.

Practice Makes Perfect

I never realized how hard it is to do nothing. I thought I was pretty close to expert level and nothing. Nothing is one of my favorite things to do. Then I got a boss and I realized that he always wanted me to do something. Even when there was nothing to do, I had to do something! Nothing makes way more sense then something.

So now I was doing something and I must have done too much because then I got the Flu. Flu A to be specific and all I wanted to do was nothing but something kept coming up! This time it wasn’t the boss telling me to do something but instead a series of official Fat Man Little Trail projects. So while my body was telling me to do less, I kept having to do more! What happened! I used to be so good at nothing and now nothing was what I didn’t have time to do anymore!

Just as I started to to feel better from all the something’s and the Flu, I finally thought I was ready to do less. I always heard that less is more but, wouldn’t you know it, something came up. This time it was a root canal. That is not nothing! If you ever wondered if there was anything worse than tooth pain, yes, yes there is. That is the sounds of a dentist drilling through your teeth, past your jaw and somewhere into your soul. However, in the end, it was worth it and I was ready to finally do nothing.

Windows that Close

By the time I was finally ready to do nothing, something I have been training for my whole life, the winter funk was over. Gone were the gray days that make the naps so sweet. Now its nothing but people running in tank tops and reminding me that I have lost that winter 50 yet. I missed my whole window to hibernate! Unlike the bears, I didn’t wake up skinny and hungry for spring. Instead, I sat searching my calendar for the missing days. I found them, there were all filled with something to do.

So now its time to get back at it. The longer days mean more can be done. Nothing is just a memory of what might have been but I was always too busy to accomplish. Now I will focus on something, at least until the winter returns and I can do nothing once more!
