Sumpter Valley Railroad Interpretive Site

On a recent road trip between Boise and Bend, Oregon, I was able to see a lot of Eastern Oregon. It is some beautiful country and I really enjoyed the drive. The longer the drive went, the more nature began to call. I needed to get out and enjoy some nature and take care of some business. I pulled over to what I thought was just a small rest area and found myself at the trailhead for the Sumpter Valley Railroad Interpretive Site. The site was a great break from a long drive and little did I know that I would learn so much about the history of central Oregon just by needing a break.

The Hike

There really isn’t too much to the hike. About a half mile to the tracks but the area is beautiful. In late June it was lush and green. Despite being just off the highway, I found it to be nice and peaceful and a great way to get off the road and stretch the legs.

The trail is really easy to follow and is pretty wide and flat. There is also not much elevation or anything to really deal with from a technical perspective. It really is just a wonderful little nature walk that leads to a bit of history.

The History

It is always nice to have a bit of history mixed into a hike. At the Sumpter Valley Railroad Interpretive Site there are several info graphics, in the gallery below, that tell history of the rail and location. There are stories about having to invent a “Dixie Switchback” to slow trains down the decline, the rush of supplies for gold mining and livestock before settling into providing support for the lumber industry, a map of where the towns of the past were connected by this once important rail line. These are the stories that get lost over time. They get overgrown with the forest and forgotten if we don’t keep telling them and listening to them.

What hasn’t been lost to time, yet, is a few yards of track and this gearing system that can still be seen at the site. The trail ends with a small loop that walks around the split track and circles around this machine. I don’t know exactly what it was for but it is still mostly in tact under a layer of rust. This was way more than I expected to see when I stopped at a restroom on a road trip, but turned into an amazing and educational break.

Distance and Elevation

If you don’t have the AllTrails app you might want to check it out, I really love mine. It records your progress and is a great way to search for hikes that are nearby and gives you difficulty measurements. According to AllTrails today’s hike was around .90 miles and had a total elevation gain of about 49 feet including undulations. That put the high point at around 5,174 feet. I was also moving for a total 22 minutes.

Wrapping up the Sumpter Valley Railroad Interpretive Site

What a fun little break this turned out to be! Just off the side of the highway and full of information and a short walk to a link to the past. I wasn’t expecting anything really and it turned out to be really fascinating. The lush green woods were a great break from the drive and finding the tracks was an added bonus.

Because this is such a small area, I don’t know if it would be great for a standalone trip. However, because it’s so small, it is a great place to stop at anytime you are driving through the area. I really enjoyed the 20 minutes at the site and feel like I learned a lot about the history of the state I was visiting for one of the first times.
