Oregon Sunsets
The sun setting is often leaves me melancholy. The energy of the day evaporating behind the horizon. What was full of potential has now seen its final moments. The hope that comes from a sunrise, of a new day, new opportunities, is missing from a last moments of Sol’s journey through the sky. While the sun rises with a shout, it sure seems to set with a whisper. That has how I felt watching the sun fall victim to the mountains in Colorado, or the plains of the Midwest. Just another moment lost. Then I finally found my first Oregon Sunset.

Watching the white hot glow, turn yellow, red, then orange as it eases its way to the horizon hit different in Oregon. The sun didn’t hide behind a mountain, but instead joined the sea. The final moments were not hidden by shadow but revealed in the reflection of the waiting water. A softer landing for the orb that powers our days. The sun joins gently pulsating water mirroring the sky in color and temperament. A dash of color sliding across a blank canvas of blue. Slowly illuminating the puffs of clouds with a pastel palette of perfection.

The Oregon Sunsets don’t lay down in darkness but explode with color. It’s fingers stretching, reaching to hold on for one more moment. Shining its glow on the sea below and sky above. Just waiting, lingering, like it never wants to leave. The last moments sit frozen in time. The wind slows, the waves seemingly hold the collective breath of the entire ocean. All eyes locked on the moment, like watching a lover walk away and capturing every second, every detail. Knowing the world will be darker while they are gone but the beauty of the last moment can last a lifetime.

Sunset Beach
The first beach I witnessed an Oregon Sunset was at Sunset Beach. Sunset Beach is located near Coos Bay in southern Oregon and it’s name pretty much sums it up. There is actually a really nice little cove here that is surrounded on two sides with cliffs that protects the beach. It was a smaller intimate beach that was popular at sunset and well worth the stop.

Bandon Beach
Bandon Beach in southern Oregon is simply stunning. The rocks here in the ocean lead to some very impressive sunsets. Bandon Beach was crowded but is so large that it doesn’t feel so. Some of the best angles to catch the sun attracted a small grouping of photographers, but there was plenty of space to have a nice quiet sunset experience. Plus, if you don’t want to head down to the water, there are some great overlooks that you can enjoy the sunset from.

Harris Beach
Harris Beach State Park is in very southern Oregon, not too far from the California border. There were a couple of overlooks near the campground that provided some amazing views of the sunset from a little higher up. The overlook I stopped at was full of people but we all stood in silence and watched as the sun took its final bow for the evening.
